Green Policy
At MOUNT SEVERN we are committed to working in a sustainable way. We are undertaking the following actions in order to achieve this and welcome your help and support in making this happen and thus help our planet:
- We comply with the requirements of environmental legislation and approved codes of practice.
- We continuously seek to improve our environmental and social performance.
- We reduce pollution, emissions and waste.
- We reduce the use of energy, water and other resources.
- We raise awareness, encourage participation and train employees in sustainable business practices.
- We expect similar environmental standards from all suppliers and contractors
- We assist customers to use products and services in an environmentally sensitive way.
- We liaise with the local community.
- We have minimised our risks associated with social and environmental issues.
- We have joined the Green Tourism Business Scheme as an indicator of our sustainable practices.
We would like to ask you to help us – the folder in the library has suggestions on what you can do to be a greener visitor – www.green-business.co.uk
OUR VISITOR CHARTER
We would respectfully ask that you are a ‘responsible visitor’ to our area and would like to suggest SEVEN things that you can do to help us and in turn to help our planet:
- CONSERVE ENERGY – reduce energy by switching off lights and electronic equipment when not in use. Closing windows if heating is on, using the shutters and curtains in the evening.
- GIVE THE CAR A REST – we are only a 10 minute walk to town. There are also a number of cycle rides and walks locally.
- SHOP LOCAL – we are fortunate to have some fantastic local producers of food and drink (some organic) sold in the town and surrounding area, together with great art and craft from the region.
- REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE – try to avoid overly packaged goods. Many shops do not provide carrier bags, so please take a re-useable one.
- BE WATER WISE – please use water carefully. Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth, shower quickly rather than bath.
- RESPECT NATURE – help us to look after the landscape, river and wildlife by not littering, guarding against fire and using footpaths and cycle-ways responsibly.
BEHIND THE SCENES!!
At Mount Severn we try whenever and wherever possible to embrace ‘green living’ – given that we work in a Grade II listed property – this is not always possible – but we are continually trying to improve and your comments, suggestions and feedback will be most welcome. Don’t forget to complete the Feedback Questionnaire!
Here are some of the things that go on ‘behind the scenes’:
- Recycling of all cardboard, plastic, glass and tin (yours too!)
- Composting of all non-cooked waste produce
- Using ‘re-cycled’ ink cartridges and disposing of the old ones by donating to the ‘wildlife trust’
- Using a number of ‘Fairtrade’ products
- Using predominantly CFL lights (please remember to switch them off!)
- Using ‘eco friendly’ cleaning and washing products
- Sourcing local produce (some organic) and free range eggs
- A number of our staff walk or cycle to work – some 3 miles!
We are doing our bit – please try to do your bit:
Finally – have a GREAT time – and come back to explore more!
